iphone 3.1.2 install+jailbreak problems (resolved)

Nov. 22nd, 2010 | 12:08 am

i've been digging about on google for the solution to this problem, eventually came up with a hack workaround. i should post this in some forum but hoping google will lead the next person questing here.

I was on iPhone OS 3.0.1, finally decided to upgrade -- but not to 4.x as I'm still hearing it's slow on the iPhone 3G that I have. So first I tried 3.1.3, but no matter what I couldn't get it to work -- it seems that the filesystem installed has some method for symlinking files.. that doesn't work. After realizing the dev-team folks didn't recommend moving from 3.1.2->3.1.3 unless you are having specific battery problems, I tried 3.1.2.

However, I kept seeing problems with trying to bring Cydia up-to-date. After ssh'ing in to the iphone, narrowed down the problem to this:
Unpacking firmware-sbin (from .../firmware-sbin_0-1_iphoneos-arm.deb) ...
cp: cannot stat `/usr/sbin/nvram': No such file or directory
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/firmware-sbin_0-1_iphoneos-arm.deb (--unpack):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
removed `/sbin/fsck.sbin'
removed `/sbin/fsck_hfs.sbin'
removed `/sbin/fstyp.sbin'
removed `/sbin/fstyp_hfs.sbin'
removed `/sbin/mount.sbin'
removed `/sbin/mount_hfs.sbin'
removed `/sbin/newfs_hfs.sbin'
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/firmware-sbin_0-1_iphoneos-arm.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
localhost:/private/etc/apt/sources.list.d root#

So, sadly, the simple enough fix was "touch /usr/sbin/nvram". After that, "apt-get -f upgrade firmware-sbin" and "apt-get upgrade cydia" worked a treat.
