Bridge Gate
Jun. 10th, 2009 | 04:32 pm
perhaps heralding another round of flickring and lj photoblogging. perhaps not. from a blessed roll of Ilford XP2 where nearly every negative of the 12 was enjoyable in some way. A rare occurrence.
This gate prevents passage across a bridge in the magical -- and I do not use that world lightly -- Altamont Garden. Best gardens I think I've ever been to.

this is one picture from 12 rolls of film i took in las vegas & mukilteo... then i took 18 in colorado... and 7 in the bahamas... and a good few misc in-between. i need to get a negative scanner, i need to get my ass into scanning the prints i have with my cheap & cheerful HP scan/print/copier (which, truth be told, i think is possibly good enough). mostly i just need to get my ass in gear.
also, it'd be very nice to win a Drobo from Scott Bourne and HTTP://WWW.MYDL.ME

nice but ominously cloudy beach walk. crap scan compared to the machine print i got. hm.
don't think there's much interesting here, but i like the light/dark on the grass.

it's always sunnier on the other side
Aug. 29th, 2008 | 03:17 pm
nearing the end of my good b&w pictures from the Aug 16th weekend in Westport. After we did a bit of the Reek, we drove out to Oldhead (Old head?) where herself was taken on holiday years ago. We could see the sun -- and this would be more effective in color -- had come out in Achill, and considered that we should have gone there for the day. So, Sun in Achill, cloud on Croagh Patrick.

I think this is my favorite of this roll, at least the sharable ones.
Pretty exhausted from staying up too late Monday & Tuesday nights to see the beginning of the DNCC speeches. Have watched them all via the web site -- this one is pretty good, maybe more fun after watching/listening to an hour of delegate counts: DNCC Roll Call: New York
I decided a little while ago to see if I could both improve my photography and also pursue 'ranking' in flickr... so I've been active in some groups and looking for the more serious ones that honestly critique one another's photographs. I found one group that seemed to trade quite detailed critiques, and asked to join. Kinda offended and deflated by their answer:
Your request to join "The Portfolio:Pro Invitation" [POST 1 - COMMENT & GRADE 3] has been declined. The group administrator gave the following reason:
Thank you for taking the time to request membership. We have reviewed your photostream and would like to compliment you on your work. However, at this time we feel that your work does not yet meet the standards required by the group. To understand what those standards are, please browse the group's pool. If at some later stage you feel your work meets or even exceeds those standards, please reapply for membership, we would love to have you join us then.
Happy snapping,

In fairness, their pool is full of very good photographs. It's a reasonable reality check and motivator to improve.

despite the grousing on flickr about the defects, i kinda like them. mind you, i think my view of anything taken medium format is seen a bit through rose-colored glasses.

somebody called this 'stunning' on flickr. he was probably just being nice, but did add it as a favorite.
this comes from a late evening walk on the last bank holiday on the canal west of the cross guns bridge. also from playing with emphasis and layers in a photoshop-like mac program, pixelmator.
the walk was nice, and a little strange. early evening, warm but cold out of the sun. i went up on a ridge and was looking about when i realized that there was somebody sleeping on the grass below me, out of sight of the path. he passed me walking west when i was coming home. there was also one set of loud, rough-sounding drinkers along the path, and signs that it's that set that is prominent there, at least in marking the place.
This is the original:
I'm currently waiting for things to finish in work so I can leave.

*not* my photograph. reminds me that I need to buy a film scanner, though. while i very much like the guys at Camera Exchange, their scanner is crap and it takes days for them to scan things in TIFF format. I think I'll try to follow up this thread with more images I like on flickr that indicate which scanner was used.
This seems to have been scanned on an Epson v700
